What is the New Wave of Chinese Science Fiction and how do the invisible aspects of reality that it brings to light impact the genre, the scholarship, and our understanding of literature in general? In this first instalment of the Sinophone Unrealities podcast, I talk with\u00a0Mingwei\u00a0Song about his love of science fiction, his latest book\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0Fear of Seeing<\/span><\/i>, and his critically acclaimed experiments with SF poetry.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We take a peek at invisibility on all levels of literary research:\u00a0From\u00a0the unseen realms of society that take centre stage in works by writers such as Han Song,\u00a0to\u00a0the overlooked sides of SF that emerge through poetry, and\u00a0beyond into\u00a0the hidden sides of academia where\u00a0poets\u00a0dwell.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Invisible Guest<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0Mingwei\u00a0Song\u00a0(<\/span>https:\/\/www.wellesley.edu\/ealc\/faculty\/songm<\/span><\/a>\u00a0)\u00a0is Associate Professor of Chinese & Director of Chinese program at Wellesley College, Massachusetts USA. He has published several monographs\u00a0on\u00a0both\u00a0modern\u00a0and contemporary\u00a0Chinese literature including<\/span>\u00a0Young China: National Rejuvenation and the Bildungsroman 1900-1959<\/span><\/i>,\u00a0<\/span>\u300a<\/span>\u4e94\u56db<\/span>@100<\/span>\u300b<\/span>\u00a0(May Fourth@100) with David Der-wei\u00a0Wang and\u00a0<\/span>\u300a<\/span>\u4e2d\u570b\u79d1\u5e7b\u65b0\u6d6a\u6f6e<\/span>\u300b<\/span>\u00a0(New Wave of Chinese Science Fiction). His pioneering work on new wave Chinese SF has made him one of the leading scholars in this field and\u00a0his latest –much anticipated– book\u00a0<\/span>The Fear of Seeing: The Poetics and Politics of Chinese Science Fiction<\/span><\/i>\u00a0is forthcoming\u00a0with\u00a0Columbia University Press. His poetry has appeared in\u00a0eminent\u00a0journals including the legendary\u00a0<\/span>\u4eca\u5929<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>(Today)\u00a0and a collaborative collection with Luo\u00a0Yijun\u00a0(<\/span>\u99f1\u4ee5\u8ecd<\/span>)\u00a0is underway.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Hidden\u00a0Host:<\/span><\/b>\u00a0Astrid\u00a0M\u00f8ller-Olsen\u00a0(<\/span>https:\/\/www.sol.lu.se\/en\/person\/AstridMollerOlsen<\/span><\/a>\u00a0)\u00a0is postdoctoral fellow\u00a0with\u00a0Lund University (Sweden),\u00a0University of Stavanger (Norway),\u00a0and University of Oxford (UK)\u00a0in a position\u00a0funded by the Swedish Research Council.
